Paint Correction in Warrington
By Alex, Improve Details · Last updated 5 October 2026
Paint correction is machine polishing in one, two or three stages to permanently remove swirl marks, holograms, light scratches, oxidation and other paint defects — not hide them with fillers. Improve Details performs paint correction at our Lilford Street studio in Warrington, measured with a paint thickness gauge and finished under inspection lighting.
What is paint correction?
Paint correction is the machine polishing of a car's paintwork to permanently remove defects — swirl marks, spider webbing, holograms (buffer trails), light scratches, wash marring, oxidation, water spots and etching — rather than hiding them with fillers or glazes. Using dual-action (DA) and rotary polishers with cutting compounds and finishing polishes, we level the clear coat by microscopic amounts until the defects are gone and clarity returns.
The critical constraint: correction is limited by clear-coat thickness. Every panel on your car is measured with a paint thickness gauge (in microns) before we start, and a test spot confirms the approach. We will never cut more clear coat than is safe — and we'll tell you honestly when a defect is too deep to chase.
1-stage vs 2-stage vs 3-stage correction
| Feature | 1-stage enhancement | 2-stage correction | 3-stage correction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Process | One polishing step | Cutting stage + finishing stage | Heavy cut + medium polish + finishing polish |
| Defects removed | Light swirls, wash marring; gloss restored | Moderate swirls, holograms, light scratches | Heavy defects, deeper scratches, severe oxidation |
| Finish level | Big improvement, not flawless | Near-flawless on most paints | Show-car finish where clear coat allows |
| Best for | Well-kept cars, pre-sale, pre-coating prep | Typical swirled daily drivers | Badly neglected or show paintwork |
Who is paint correction for?
- Your paint is covered in swirl marks or spider webbing visible in sunlight.
- A previous "detailer" or bodyshop left holograms and buffer trails.
- Your car looks dull or hazy even when clean — oxidation and wash marring.
- You've bought a used car and want the paintwork reset to its best.
- You want ceramic coating or PPF, and the paint must be perfected first.
- You own a black car — black paint shows every defect, and correction transforms it.
When NOT to choose paint correction
- Only light dullness, no real defects. A single-stage machine polish (paint enhancement) may be all you need — we'll say so.
- Deep scratches through the colour coat. RIDS (random isolated deep scratches) that catch your fingernail often can't be fully removed safely; we can improve them and advise on alternatives.
- Thin or failing clear coat. If the gauge says there's nothing safe to work with, we'll tell you — no correction is better than a burn-through.
Our paint correction process, step by step
- Inspection under dedicated lighting. We map every defect — swirls, RIDS, holograms, etching — and discuss realistic outcomes with you.
- Paint thickness measurement. Every panel is measured in microns with a paint thickness gauge. Soft vs hard paint, single-stage paint on classics, metallic/pearl/solid finishes — each behaves differently and the approach is adjusted accordingly.
- Safe wash and decontamination. Wash, iron fallout removal, tar removal and clay — because polishing dirty paint just grinds contaminants into it.
- Test spot. We prove the combination of compound, pad and machine on a small area first, so you see the expected result before we commit to the whole car.
- Compounding (stages 2–3). Heavier cutting removes the deeper defects using cutting compounds and cutting pads.
- Finishing polish. Refines the finish to a deep, hologram-free gloss with finishing polishes and soft pads.
- Final inspection. The car is checked panel by panel under inspection lighting before handover.
What's included
- Full defect mapping under inspection lighting
- Paint thickness (micron) readings across every panel
- Decontamination: iron fallout removal, tar removal, clay treatment
- Test spot to confirm the correction plan
- 1, 2 or 3-stage machine polishing as agreed
- Panel wipe-down and final inspection
- Advice on protecting the finish afterwards — ceramic coating or PPF
Paint correction pricing
Every car is quoted individually — from £TODO. What affects the cost:
- Stages required — 1-stage enhancement vs 2 or 3-stage correction.
- Vehicle size — more panels, more time.
- Paint condition and hardness — soft black paint corrects differently to hard German clear coats.
- Single-stage (classic) paint — needs a specialist approach.
New-car paint defects
Around 95% of new cars arrive with minor paint defects — holograms from dealer preparation, wash marring from transport, light scratches from pre-delivery inspection (PDI). If you've just taken delivery, read our new-car paint correction page: we correct these factory, transport and dealer-prep defects, then protect the car with ceramic coating or PPF before it picks up any more.
Vehicles we correct
Daily drivers, new and used cars, performance cars, supercars and exotics, classic cars (including single-stage paint), EVs and SUVs. Regular makes include BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Range Rover, Land Rover, Porsche, Tesla — illustrative examples only, no manufacturer affiliation. Soft vs hard paint, metallic, pearl, solid and black finishes all assessed individually.
Paint correction in Warrington — local context
The number one defect we see in Warrington is wash marring and swirl marks — the North West's rain keeps cars dirty, and dirty cars washed with poor technique get swirled. Add motorway miles on the M6 and M62 (stone chips on the front end, tar and iron fallout everywhere), and most daily drivers here benefit enormously from correction followed by protection. Our studio on Lilford Street, Warrington WA5 0LE serves Stockton Heath, Lymm, Culcheth, Birchwood, Widnes, St Helens and everywhere in our service area.

Can swirl marks be removed?
Yes. Swirl marks, spider webbing and wash marring sit in the clear coat and are removed by machine polishing — compounding followed by a finishing polish. What limits correction is clear-coat thickness: we measure it with a paint thickness gauge and never cut more than is safe.
What is the difference between 1-stage and 2-stage paint correction?
A 1-stage (single-stage) correction uses one polishing step to remove light defects and restore gloss — ideal for enhancement. A 2-stage correction adds a heavier cutting stage first for deeper swirls and scratches, then refines the finish. Heavily defected paint may need a third stage.
Does a new car need paint correction?
In most cases, yes. Around 95% of new cars have minor paint defects — holograms from dealer preparation, wash marring from transport, or light scratches from pre-delivery inspection. A new-car correction removes these before protection is applied.
Will paint correction remove deep scratches?
It depends on depth. Scratches confined to the clear coat can usually be levelled; scratches through to the colour coat or primer (RIDS — random isolated deep scratches) may only be improved, not fully removed. We assess this with a test spot and inspection lighting before quoting.
Is paint correction safe for my car's paint?
Yes, when done properly. We measure paint thickness in microns across every panel, work within the safe limits of the clear coat, and use a test spot to confirm the approach. Correction is limited by clear-coat thickness — we will tell you honestly when a defect is too deep to chase safely.
How long does paint correction take?
It varies with vehicle size, paint hardness and defect level — a single-stage enhancement is typically a day's work, while multi-stage correction on a large or badly swirled car takes longer. (TODO: owner to confirm turnaround times.)
Do you offer wet-sanding?
Wet-sanding is only used where it is safe and genuinely needed, for example on isolated deeper defects. (TODO: owner to confirm whether wet-sanding is offered.)
How much does paint correction cost?
It depends on vehicle size, paint condition and how many correction stages are required. We assess every car individually — send photos on WhatsApp (07482 225323) or call 07933 498857 for an accurate quote. (TODO: owner to supply pricing.)
